In October and December, 2009, there will be workshops of traditional songs in Irish in Osaka (instructions will be given in Japanese, but can be readily understood by non-Japanese speakers as the basic practice is that of pronouncing Irish sounds). Eoiní Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin and Seán Ó Liatháin sing "Dé Bheatha-sa ' Pheátí" (Welcome Home, Peatí), a lúibíní song. Lúibíní is a conversation song in Irish, thriving very strong in Muskerry Gaeltacht (Cork/Kerry border). In the lúibíní competition in Oireachtas na Gaeilge those from that area are overpowering. This video clip was taken in 1977, when Eoiní (left) looked young. On the right is Seán Ó Liatháin, nephew of Pádraig Ó Tuama, one of the composers of this song. In the background can be seen Bothy Band, whose Paddy Keenan looks bored to death. I quote here an explanation by Eilís Uí Shúilleabháin, once published in the 'sean-nós event' website, where I originally found this video. I add my translation to the lyrics below the video. "Seán Buí" is an Englishman. In the song Diarmuid speaks to Peáití, recently returned to Ireland from England. The tune is "Tatter Jack Walsh". This song is said to be particularly famous among lúibíní repertoire.

That's my other brother, Eoiní, or as they would say Eoiní Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin, and that other fella is Seán Ó Liatháin, a good friend of Diarmuid. They used to write luibíní together before the loss of Diarmuid (in 1991). This piece comes from the programme Ciarán Mac Mathúna presented--I can't remember the name of it now--and it was shown on 'Come West Along the Road'.

Iarla Ó Lionáird sings 'Caoineadh na dTrí Mhuire' (Keening of the Three Marys). This song about the Passion of Jesus comprises, alternately, questions and lamenting ochones. Iarla Ó Lionáird sings 'Táimse im' Chodladh'. Though it is sometimes used for funerals with the title ('I Am Asleep') literally interpreted, in fact it belongs to the aisling (vision) genre, including the instigation to revolt against English oppression. The 'spéirbhean' (beautiful woman) is the personification of Ireland. From the Highland Sessions 1 (BBC, 2005).

A true gem. One of the very best performances among the excellent songs in the Transatlantic Sessions 3. One of her career highlights as well. It appears that all the accompanying musicians in the studio are moved to tears within. Scottish Karen Matheson sings in Irish 'Crucán na bPáiste', a song about children's burial place in Co. Mayo in Ireland. The words in the refrain are taken from those said in crossing oneself and portion of Hail Mary. Included in her album Downriver (2005).

Additional notes: The writer of the lyrics of 'Crucán na bPáiste' is Brendan Graham, from Co. Mayo, who is a founding member of IMRO and co-wrote the famed song 'You Raise Me Up' used in 2006 Winter Olympic exhibition in Torino (Turin). The song has recently been awarded the 'Million-Air' appellation by US radio stations, which means it has been aired more than a million times. The air of 'Crucán na bPáiste' is that of the traditional song 'Cailín na Gruaige Báinne'.
